Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile In Kosciusko County

A small number of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in southern Kosciusko County.
Bob Weaver, Kosciusko County health department administrator, said he received notification from the Indiana Department of Health Tuesday that some mosquitoes were found to have the virus.
Weaver said the state will continue to set up traps and test the mosquitoes for West Nile until there is a freeze.
Weaver said last year there were mosquitoes found with West Nile close to Warsaw city limits.
State health officials recommend the following preventative measures: avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active in the late afternoon to dusk and early morning, apply insect repellent and install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home.
To reduce potential mosquito breeding grounds discard old tires, tin cans and ceramic pots; repair failed septic systems; drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers left outdoors; and keep grass cut short and shrubbery trimmed.
Other advice is to clean clogged roof gutters, frequently replace the  water in pet bowls and flush ornamental fountains and birdbaths.
