NIPSCO announced on Thursday that customer electric rates will be heading up at the turn of the year, but not as much as first proposed.
The utility company says an average customer will see an overall increase of roughly six dollars per month, but that’s less than the $11 per month that was in an original proposal. Included within the original bill charge will be a decrease in the monthly customer charge, which is the flat monthly cost associated with serving customers regardless of usage, and that will go down to $13.50 per month from $14.
The last change in base electric rates was in 2016. Primary drivers for the increase include investments in upgrading electric infrastructure, environmental upgrades and a shift in the way some large industrial customers will obtain electricity in the future.
