A northern Indiana couple is facing animal cruelty charges after authorities say three dozen dogs were found living in “deplorable” conditions at their rural property.
James and Shannon Ballard were charged June 20 with nine counts each of animal cruelty following an investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities received an animal cruelty complaint in May about numerous dogs and other animals living at the couple’s Camden residence.
The Pharos-Tribune reports that 36 dogs were later removed from the Ballards’ property and placed in foster homes or shelters after being found in “deplorable” conditions without food, water and shelter. Four cats and 10 chickens were also removed.
The couple is scheduled for a Sept. 18 bench trial. Online court documents don’t list attorneys for either Ballard.
