Work is about to start on a major overhaul of the University of Notre Dame's landmark library building. University Librarian Diane Walker says the Hesburgh Library hasn't changed much since it opened in 1963 and hasn't kept up with how today's students work there. Work on the renovation's first phase is to begin Dec. 22 and take about a year. The South Bend Tribune reports that phase will cost about $10 million. Eight total phases are planned so that the library can remain open and the full construction cost hasn't been determined. Walker says the 14-story building won't be expanded, so changes aren't planned for the iconic mosaic known popularly as “Touchdown Jesus” that faces the football stadium.
