BREMEN — Last week’s tragic accident near Bremen that left three young Amish children dead has led to an emotional turn of events for both families involved.
The three children died while they were riding in a pony cart on Fir Road in Marshall County and were rear-ended by a car driven by a 17-year-old girl.
Soon after the accident, the parents of the three children, Kevin and Inez Yoder, invited the driver and her family to their home to console her.
The driver’s mother, Tracy Coleman, wrote about the gathering in a Facebook post that was made public.
She wrote, in part, that the parents hugged the teenage driver, told her they loved her, that they were sorry it happened to her, and that they forgave her. “They believe it was a freak accident and do not hold her responsible for this tragedy.”
The family also gave the driver one of the children’s Bibles to help her heal, she wrote.
“Through this tragedy, I’ve seen more love, compassion, understanding and grace come from the Amish community than I ever thought imaginable. My family’s world tragically collided with the most remarkable family I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing,” she wrote.
The Amish family also left notes posted at a park in Bremen urging people to stop directing hatred toward the girl who News Now Warsaw has chosen not to identify because of her age and the fact she has not been charged by police.
Furthermore, the family believes the driver was “a tool in God’s hands” used to bring the children “home to Jesus,” according to another post left at the park in Bremen.
Coleman also wrote that her daughter fully cooperated with police and that her daughter did not see the cart beforehand because it happened on a hilly stretch of Fir Road.
