Warsaw police are asking that anyone who witnessed a crash Wednesday evening that killed a Warsaw pedestrian on U.S. 30 to contact the detective division.
At approximately 6:02 p.m. Wednesday, emergency responders were called to a fatal accident at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Commerce Drive, Warsaw.
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Wendy Coulstring of Warsaw.
An SUV was traveling north on Commerce Drive and was stopped at the intersection at U.S. 30 for a stop sign.
The driver told police she had her right turn signal on and had checked right to ensure nothing was in the roadway. She then checked left and then proceeded onto U.S. 30.
Immediately when she pulled out onto U.S. 30, she saw a person in the right lane of travel. The driver said she struck the pedestrian – later identified as Coulstring – which caused Coulstring to flip into the left lane of travel. The driver said her SUV hit Coulstring with the left front bumper area.
The driver said when she stopped, she believed she saw and heard at least one other vehicle – but possibly two – hit or run over Coulstring. She believed the first vehicle was a truck and the second might have been a car but she was not sure.
Coulstring suffered numerous injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver consented to a blood draw.
The Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team arrived on scene and began its own investigation, according to the crash report.
Warsaw Police was assisted by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Winona Lake Police, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Winona Lake Fire, Warsaw Street Department, Lutheran EMS, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kosciusko County coroner.
