With a crash recently involving an Indiana State Police Trooper and considering how often officers are traveling on I-69, Michael Joyner, Public Information Officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department, is wanting to reminder Hoosier drivers about the Move Over Law. The Move Over Law went into effect on July 1, 1999 in Indiana, the first state to pass such legislation. Since then all 50 states have enacted similar laws. The Indiana law requires driver to approach cautiously when an emergency or highway maintenance vehicle is stopped on two or four lane roadways with emergency lights flashing. Driver must change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if they can do it safely. If not they must reduce their speed 10 mph under the posted speed limit and proceed with caution.
