It appears sex-related crimes are on the increase on college campuses. According to a survey by the Education Department, the number of sex offenses at American colleges and universities went up in the past decade even with campus crime overall going down. In 2011 there were more than 3,000 forcible sex offenses, a 50% increase from a decade earlier. The main focus of the report was on crime and safety at elementary and secondary schools. It found in 2011 fewer crimes were reported there than 20 years ago. The data was compiled before the Sandy Hook shootings.
