Another local phone scam is making the rounds, and Detectives from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department say several incidents of the scam have taken place in our county.
It works like this: the caller portrays themselves as the local police department, sheriff’s department, or court system. The Sheriff’s Department says the caller then presumably attempts to deceive Kosciusko County residents by advising that they have some type of outstanding court cost/fines.
The Sheriff’s Department says the scam call may also say you’ve missed a court date and that a warrant will be issued for your arrest. In order to resolve this, the caller suggests you obtain a pre-paid credit card in the amount of the fictitious fine.
A news release from the Sheriff’s Department warns the scam callers may use names of actual police officers and court officials.
Kosciusko County Chief Deputy Rocky Goshert advises that neither the county court system, nor the Sheriff’s Department, contact individuals over the phone regarding such matters.
Payments for court cost/fines/warrants have to be made in person at the Kosciusko County Justice Building, further disproving the scam.
If you get one of these scam calls, Detectives say to simply hang-up.
