The residents are tired of the train horns, and so is South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Residents near 11 crossings that should be deemed a quiet zone in South Bend have instead been bombarded with train horns lately. It stems from South Bend losing its quiet zone status with the Norfolk Southern and Grand Trunk Western railways earlier this summer.
City officials say that the necessary upgrades to make the trains quiet again were done, and the Federal Railroad Administration signed off on them.
And yet, the trains can still be heard throughout South Bend along those railways. Buttigieg put out a call to residents to report train horn violations through the link below.
You can also call 800-724-5040 to report a violation to the FRA. Be sure to note the time, location, and cadence (like long-long-short rhythms) to the FRA.
