A Whitley County grand jury indicted David G. Hagan for murder and reckless homicide in the shooting death of Adam W. Porter, 29, on Aug. 14 in South Whitley.
The grand jury issued the charges after meeting for three days in Columbia City, the county seat, examining evidence and deliberating whether or not criminal charges should be brought.
Hagan, 52, is being held without bond in the Whitley County Jail, according to a press release from Whitley County Prosecutor Matthew Rentschler issued Friday afternoon.
The shooting took place in Hagan’s backyard at 229 W. Buckeye St., South Whitley, at 8:44 p.m.
Porter is the son of Danny G. Porter and Tonya E. Dundas Warner. He worked with his father at DP Plumbing – Heating – Electrical.
Grand juries are convened at the request of a prosecuting attorney and have wide latitude to inquire into potential criminal activity. The group consists of six grand jurors and one alternate grand juror. All proceedings, including the identity and testimony of witnesses and any evidence presented, are absolutely secret pursuant to state statute.
The Indiana State Police, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and South Whitley Police Department were involved with the investigation.
