In light of the cold months ahead, fire officials are warning Hoosiers to use extra caution when it comes to alternate forms of heating. State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says space heaters account for one-third of home heating fires. They should always be kept away from lose or flammable objects like clothing, curtains, bedding, and furniture. Also, avoid using candles or appliances to heat the home, as well as stoves or ovens to avoid carbon monoxide build up. fireplaces should always be regularly cleaned and should have properly working ventilation.
