The future of St. Joseph County’s curbside recycling program was thrown into some doubt this week, thanks to one county commissioner’s bold act.
A vote was set to take place Monday on a 10-year contract extension for Borden Waste-Away Service out of Elkhart. The contractor has run the recycling program for South Bend, New Carlisle, North Liberty, and unincorporated areas of the county.
The South Bend Tribune reports Commissioner Dave Thomas questioned the cost and fairness of the program and suggested requesting bids. When no other board member appeared to support him, Thomas walked out. This prevented a vote because not enough members were present for one after he left.
The county attorney says it’d be harder to get a better deal than Borden is offering.
