FORT WAYNE – A group of students and faculty protested IPFW’s plan to cut a number of programs on Wednesday.
Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne plans to cut geology, philosophy and women’s studies by January 1. French and German degree programs will also be suspended as part of its restructuring.
IPFW officials say budget cuts and dropping enrollment are the reason for the cuts.
Kristen Peck, a student majoring in Communications, thinks it’s about more than just money.
“I think it has a little to do with ideology, and the way that certain political leaders want to create… this area as a certain type of market,” Peck said.
She adds that while the Women’s Studies program is painted as losing money, it’s actually making money, telling people to look up the truth online.
Women’s Studies student Jennifer Reeve said she thinks students are getting a raw deal.
“There have been changes within the school that we were not told about ahead of time,” she said. “We haven’t had a say in our education.”
Students will be out protesting again Thursday.
