Two teens, who allegedly stole a vehicle in the middle of the night Monday then crashed it into a utility pole, are facing juvenile probation charges.

According to a Warsaw Police Department crash report, police responded at 2:59 a.m. Tuesday to the intersection of East Sheridan and North Grant streets and found a 2018 Kia Sorento crashed into a NIPSCO utility pole.

The vehicle – which was traveling west on East Sheridan Street before running off the road and into the pole – sustained extensive damage to the front bumper, hood and cassis, along with a broken rear window from a loose car battery that had flown out the window during the collision.

The NIPSCO pole sustained moderate damage to the pole and electrical components and caused a power outage in the area for several hours, according to police.

The driver, a 14-year-old boy from Warsaw, and his passenger, a 13-year-old girl from Warsaw, fled the scene and were later located by police at Kosciusko Community Hospital, according to the crash report.

Through a police investigation, it was determined that the teens had allegedly stolen the vehicle from where it was parked in the 700 block of East Main Street, Warsaw.

The driver suffered cuts to the left side of his jaw and neck, while the passenger had cuts on her chest, according to the report.

Both were charged by police through the juvenile probation department.

Estimated damage is between $10,000 and $25,000.
