Three Bloomington officers injured after woman encourages dogs to attack

BLOOMINGTON — Three police officers were hospitalized after being bitten by a woman’s dogs during an attempted arrest.

The officers were called around 2 p.m. on Aug. 2 to the B-Line trail on Country Club Drive to help arrest Stacy Herrington. Court documents say that Herrington was facing multiple charges in Monroe County related to meth possession and resisting police.

Police say Herrington was trying to cross a creek with her two dogs when one officer caught up to her. As he reached for her arm, he lost his grip. While he was trying to detain her, her two dogs ran up and started biting his left leg.

Bloomington Police Department says Herrington “yelled for the dogs to keep attacking the officer” after the first bite. She also attempted to grab the officer’s radio to stop him from calling for backup.

As the officer got up to free himself from the dogs, Herrington reportedly stood up and tried to run away along the creek.

The officer then pointed his Taser at her, and she started to comply. However, her dogs began biting the officer’s legs again, and she yelled for them to keep attacking.

At that point, the officer used his Taser on Herrington, causing her to fall to the ground. When backup officers arrived to help detain her, she pulled her arms away, which led the two dogs to bite two more officers.

Bloomington Animal Control took both dogs and quarantined them, while the three officers were treated at IU Health Bloomington for bite wounds on their legs.

Herrington was evaluated for injuries before her arrest. Later, she was taken to the Monroe County Jail and charged with three counts of battery, which are Level 5 felonies, as well as one count of resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony.

Additionally, she had three outstanding warrants.
