Toddler killed in accident near Nappanee

NAPPANEE — Kosciusko County Officials are investigating an accident involving a “Fork Truck” and a 1-year-old toddler south of Nappanee.

The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday at 12734 North CR 1025W, according to a new release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary investigation determined the Fork Truck driver was unaware the toddler was behind the machine while moving in reverse.

The vehicle struck and backed over the toddler, according to the news release.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and began performing life-saving measures on the toddler but the child was pronounced dead soon afterward by Kosciusko County Coroner Tyler Huffer.

The operator of the Fork Truck was Kevin Borkholder, 34, Nappanee. 

The name of the toddler will not be released at this time.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Nappanee Fire Department, Nappanee EMS, Milford PD, Department of Child Services, and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.

The accident remains under investigation by the KCSO Detective Division.
