Dozens of rail cars jumped the tracks in a derailment Monday morning east of New Haven. Twenty-six freight cars in the 84-car train were forced off the rails, but there appears to be no threat to public safety. Norfolk Southern spokesman Dave Pidgeon told The Journal Gazette no one was hurt and no hazardous materials were released. He says 26 derailed cars ended up on their side and five remained upright. The train was en route from Ohio to Illinois. The derailment is expected to close Webster Road and Dawkins Road for the foreseeable future, which is near Department of Defense property, the old CASAD Depot. Detour signs have been posted in the area.
