An Elkhart man and woman have been Monday for a combined 37 counts of forgery after they were accused of forging dozens of personal checks that belonged to a former roommate. 65 year-old Allen Wayne Evans and 45 year-old Sarah Marie Gerstorff are accused of stealing about 10-thousand dollars from the victim’s bank account by cashing his checks for between $60 and $400 without his permission over the course of a month and a half. The victim reported the theft to the Elkhart Police Department back in January after he pulled out his checkbook and noticed the check numbers were out of order. Police say the victim went to his bank and found nearly 50 checks had been forged. Police say surveillance footage shows Evans and Gerstorff cashing those checks at a 1st Source Bank in Elkhart County and the suspects provided photo ID each time they cashed a check. Both are being held with bond set at 25-thousand dollars for each.
