Cleveland Fire Chief Rich Newman says two firefighters were injured when helping fight the fire at Cana Cabinetry on Phillips Street in Elkhart County.
The blaze broke out around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, inside Plant 1 on the property, according to our reporting partners at WNDU.
The building was fully engulfed in flames as crews from more than a dozen departments fought back in the snow and cold.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital, while the other left the scene with frostbitten feet from excess water on the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing fire crews taking water from the hydrant at Elkhart Memorial High School to help douse the flames. Traffic was blocked on County Road 3 as a result.
Thirteen fire departments responded to the fire. WNDU reports it was the first big factory fire within at least two years.
