BENTON TOWNSHIP — The victim in a car wreck in Elkhart County has been identified as 54-year-old David Teel of Cromwell.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department said Teel was driving north on CR 43 when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway just north of CR 46. Teel’s 2006 GMC Sierra went off the road, through a stand of trees, across a ditch and into a tree on the other side of the creek, eventually resting on its side partially submerged in 6-foot-deep water.
Sheriff’s Lt. Casey Lehman said the first 911 call came in around 9:55 a.m., but authorities believe the truck may have been laying in the water overnight because the scene is very rural and the truck was not visible from the road, according to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.
Firefighters from Benton Township, Clinton Township and Syracuse all responded to the scene.
