SOUTH BEND — Heading into Saturday’s girls 4A basketball regional, the matchup was billed as Warsaw’s high-powered offense vs South Bend Washington’s tenacious defense.
Turns out that the Warsaw defense made the headlines in a 53-43 Lady Tiger win that vaulted them into the final eight teams left in 4A.
Warsaw held Purdue-commit Kira Reynolds to only 6 points and the opponents to a collective 39-percent shooting from the field.
Additionally, Warsaw held their own on the boards, finishing one rebound short of Washington’s game total and holding them to just five offensive rebounds.
Warsaw only shot 38 percent themselves and finished with a season-low 53 points, but hit 8 3-pointers and finished off the game 9-11 from the free throw line.
Joslyn Bricker led the Lady Tigers with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Brooke Winchester added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
For Bricker, it was the 61st double-figure game in 64 games over three years of varsity basketball, and the 52nd in the last 53.
For the Lady Tigers, it’s their first regional championship since 2013.
