Local firefighters are heading to North Carolina in response to Hurricane Florence.
South Bend Fire Captain Gerard Ellis tells WNDU they’ll be among those first to activate once the storm comes through.
“We have about 18 members of some local fire departments…they’re packing their gear, checking the gear, loading it up, getting ready to go in a convey,” he explains. “Firefighters from Elkhart, Mishawaka, Warsaw, Clay, and South Bend are going to head out to Raleigh, North Carolina where they’ll be part of a critical response team.”
Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory officials say Captain Nathan Iden and Firefighter Brent Fifer are a part of this team.
Ellis says rapid response to water emergencies will be a primary task for the Indiana District 2 Technical Rescue team.
