It turns out two of 19 finalists in Indiana seeking to win a grant that would benefit child care organizations are in Michiana, one of them, right here in Warsaw.
The Kosciusko County Community Foundation and the United Way of St. Joseph County are among the 19 finalists in a million-dollar grant competition. The goal is to provide access to more high-quality, affordable child care for children under the age of six.
A 2018 study showed a lack of childcare options for parents who live in what’s called “a child care desert”. That’s a neighborhood with only one spot available for every three kids. The report says more than 45 percent of children in St. Joe County, as well as statewide, live in one of these deserts.
10 grants of 100 thousand dollars will be given in December.
