A Warsaw woman is charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into the North Webster American Legion Post and taking cash and a computer.
Morgan Shepherd, 25, of 1 EMS B37 Lane, Warsaw, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 6:14 p.m. Monday and faces charges for burglary, a Level 5 felony; and theft, a Level 6 felony.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed March 12 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Feb. 13 North Webster police responded to American Legion Post 253 after an employee reported a burglary had taken place.
Upon arrival, police spoke to the employee who said when she got to the Legion the alarm for the building was not set, but her office door was locked. No signs of forced entry were found on the exterior of the Legion, according to court papers, but $607 was missing from the safe and a computer valued at $500 was missing from the employee’s office.
The employee said she might know a suspect – Shepherd- because Shepherd was recently told she could no longer work in the bar at the Legion and would no longer be scheduled for shifts, according to the affidavit. The employee further told police that Shepherd had the keys to the Legion, knew the alarm code, knew the safe code and had knowledge of the location of the office door key.
Police reviewed video surveillance footage, according to the affidavit, which allegedly showed Shepherd and another suspect arrive at the Legion and disable the alarm at 3:52 a.m. Feb. 13, retrieve the key to the office, remove the money from the safe, then return the key.
