A tragic car crash took the lives of beloved Wawasee community members Kim and Stephen Conrad last Christmas. Now golfing is being used to keep their memories alive.
Stephen was a stellar golfer that graduated from Wawasee in 2003. WNDU reports he is one of few golfers who has won the State Junior, State Amateur and State Open Titles in the state of Indiana. Stephen was later inducted into the High School Golf Hall of Fame in 2015.
“I told somebody one time it was always comforting as a coach to go to the event knowing you had the best player,” said Steve Coverstone, who coached Stephen while he was at Wawasee. “Most importantly, he was a great teammate. He always put the team first.”
The Maxwelton Golf Club where Stephen used to play is holding a fundraiser every year, beginning this year, to raise money for scholarships.
“Everyone said ‘we have to do something’,” said Bob Carlson, Owner of Maxwelton Golf Club. “Stephen’s involvement with golf made that a natural progression and it was really quite simple to get some folks together and get the ball rolling.”
“We’re trying to turn something bad into something good,” said Steve Conrad, husband and father of Kim and Stephen who was driving the vehicle the night of the crash. “I think my son and wife will be looking down on us and it will be a pretty darn good day.”
The golf outing will be Monday, July 31 at Maxwelton Golf Club in Syracuse.
The money raised at the outing will go towards scholarships for Wawasee High School graduates going on to college who have excelled in golf, basketball, cheerleading and gymnastics.
