Whitko Community Schools will be closing their middle school after this school year.
Though the district announced more than a year ago that they needed to consolidate, how they would go about it wasn’t made clear until Monday night’s school board meeting.
Once the middle school closes, sixth grade students will go to the two elementary schools, and students in seventh and eighth grade will go to Whitko High School in South Whitley.
This may mean a longer commute for Pierceton residents.
It is expected to cost the high school around $400,000 to get ready for the new students in the 2018-19 school year.
The elementary schools are not expecting any additional costs when they add the sixth graders because they have empty classrooms available due to declining enrollment.
