Tracy Wilson is seeking the Kosciusko County Coroner position.
A caucus will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kosciusko County Courthouse when precinct committeemen and women will vote for the position to be filled. Each candidate will have three minutes to state why they are seeking the seat.
Wilson, wife of Michael Wilson, former coroner and newly elected Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Territory chief, said when her husband served as coroner, changes in the office were implemented and she would like to model her work after that.
Michael Wilson served as coroner since 2013.
“One of the changes was bringing files to a central location and collecting prescription medications from homes of the deceased, placing then in a secure evidence room, removing the potential of them ending up in the hands of the community,” Tracy Wilson said.
She has served as a paramedic for Tri-County and Fulton Country for three years and has been in the medical field since 1998. She has served as one of five deputy coroners for the county since 2012.
“I think we have a pretty good track going with the coroner’s office and have a good rapport with departments we work with including the Drug Enforcement Agency in Fort Wayne,” she said.
Tracy Wilson said the coroner’s position is important because any unattended death is a coroner’s call as an investigator to determine cause and manner of death.
“Even though we come in and do an investigative job on determining cause and manner of death I also stress the importance of taking care of the deceased’s loved ones after the fact,” she said. “I always go into it thinking if that was my family member or a loved one how would I want to be treated.”
She said she also assists families with understanding autopsy reports.
