Warsaw police used a stun gun on a Winona Lake man Monday morning at Kosciusko Community Hospital.
Eric Michael Gibbs, 41, of 2905 Sandra Lane, Winona Lake, was charged with resisting law enforcement, battery on law enforcement, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and attempting to disarm an officer.
Police stopped Gibbs around 3 a.m. for speeding and erratic driving near Southside Drive, Warsaw. After failing a field sobriety test with a blood alcohol content of .22, Gibbs consented to go the hospital for a blood test to confirm the test, according to Warsaw Police Department Capt. Kip Shuter.
At 6 a.m. at Kosciusko Community Hospital, the police attempted to take Gibbs to jail when the altercation with officers began.
A nurse went to wake Gibbs up, and he attempted to punch the nurse. Officer Ross Minear then drew his stun gun. Gibbs grabbed Minear’s arm and attempted to disarm the officer. Minear deployed his stun gun to subdue Gibbs.
After Gibbs was stunned, police were able to take Gibbs into custody.
Gibbs was booked in to the Kosciusko County Jail Monday morning and bonded out later Monday afternoon.
Gibbs has not yet appeared in court.
